Recruit, Select and Support Turnaround Leaders

A significant challenge to school turnaround efforts is a lack of turnaround leaders available to work in these schools. Four education organizations —The Center on School Turnaround at WestEd, the Center on Great Teachers and Leaders, Public Impact, and the University of Virginia Darden/Curry Partnership – have been studying issues of school turnaround and have released new materials to assist state and local education agencies in recruiting, selecting, developing, and retaining school turnaround leaders.

Each Part in this series has a Facilitator’s Guide, Handouts and PowerPoint Presentation to facilitate a comprehensive and systemic approach to addressing the leadership challenge.

Part 1: Understanding Turnaround Leader Competencies

Acknowledges and identifies the unique challenges and competencies required for leading a successful school turnaround

Part 2: Recruiting and Selecting Turnaround Leaders

Explores ways to recruit, interview and select leaders with competencies to turn around low-performing schools.

Part 3: Developing and Supporting Turnaround Leaders

Focuses on the district’s role in supporting and developing turnaround leaders.
