William Robinson, Executive Director, University of Virginia’s Darden/Curry Partnership for Leaders in Education, a partner with the Center on School Turnaround (CST), showcased a strategy developed to guide state education agencies and districts in assessing the district’s readiness to support school turnaround. The webinar addressed school turnaround as a system-level issue requiring fundamental changes in district-level practice to establish the conditions for school turnaround to succeed. It also introduced turnaround readiness conditions that will help districts best position resources to enable turnaround schools to succeed.
The webinar drew on the CST’s recent publication, “District Readiness to Support School Turnaround,” Will Rumbaugh, Director for School Improvement, Georgia Department of Education, shared state implementation perspectives, while Susie Cook, former superintendent of Washington Elementary School District, Phoenix, Arizona, provided a district perspective. All shared the importance of building engagement among multiple stakeholders and creating collaborative partnerships (including that between district and school).
